The truck runs fine until the CEL comes on and then it feels like im pulling something. It wont accelerate properly and i have a hard time going up to 60 mph. When i discconect the batery and the computer reboots it runs fine. i Have tried getting the codes checked but the code reader wont work. I have replaced the PCM relays to see if the problem went away but nothing. Every time the CEL comes on i see my fuel gauge just going down and am wasting serious gas. i have 33 inch tires but i dont think it has nothing to do with the tires.

when i go to the local auto store they plug in the code reader but it wont even come on(code reader), does the port have a fuse that might have gone out? BTW i dirve a 99 4.0 4x4 ranger if that helps any.

Try disconnecting the MAF which will put it in closed loop and see if that makes a difference. If it does, clean it or replace it.

check the cigarette lighter fuse, its that same one that powers the ECU port, than get the codes read. it will pretty much be a guess on our part as to what the problem is without the codes. when the light comes on does it flash first or does it just come on solid and stay on?

ok when i disconnect the battery to reboot the computer it usually takes about an hour before iot comes on and stays on for good.

thanks for the reply so far guys, i am going to start today with the fuel filter and work my way up to the engine slowly. I will disconnect the MAF today to see what happens. thnx PEOCE!!!!!!

I bought a used Maf and didnt seem to make a diffrence. i was wondering that maybe the cable that runs to the maf might be at fault. does anyone know what type of voltage these things are suppose to register on a volt meter and wich prongs are the ones to check.

i have changed pcm fuses, air filter, maf, and am going to replace the fuel filter this afternoon.

get the codes first.......I used this link https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp to look up your owners manual. It looks like fuse #5 in the cabin fuse panel is the data link fuse. it is 10a..........check that out and get the obd-ii port working then read the codes.........I bought my codereader for $20 at Costcos(not sure if they still have them)......the saying goes DIAGNOSE THE REPLACE.........YOU HAVE A LOT OF GOOD FREE ADVISORS HERE. YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THEM....

I am not sure who was reading the codes but you realize you need to do it koeo!. There should be power there even with the key off.......

the codes read that maf was at fault and the bank 2 02 sensor wich i imagine is the passenger side o2 sensor.

i have three things in my mind right now, one is that i may not be getting any power to the maf, two my cats are plugged and three that my it might be a fuel issue.

at neutrel it wont let me rev above 4k. at take off it when i floor it it wont let me it will bogg until i let go of the pedal.

PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

Is the obd port working now? Was it the #5 fuse in the cabin fuse panel? Please tell us all of the actual codes?

Bank 2 sensor 2 is the drivers side after cat sensor

i am pretty sure the plugged cats caused my truck to act the same way....one thing i did notice before the truck had the loss of power problem was the temp gauge rising and then suddenly dropping. with plugged cats the motor creates very high cumbustion chamber temps. If this is in fact your issue look into fixing it quickly....these motors do not deal with heat very well at all. I have since corrected the cat issue and rebuilt the motor, Now i have what seems to be a smooth running and solid piece.

yes the obd port is now working the cig. lighter fuse inside the cabin was the one that was burnt and replaced.

the fuel filter has not been replaced yet, found out it needs some special tool to remove. could i just yank it out?

i will stop by auto parts store and recheck.

Can a bad 02 sensore cause any loos of power if not working right?

Are you going to post the actual codes or not? Did you get the actual numbers when you went to AZ or did they just say......something like o2 sensors. if you go back there just get them to print out or tell you the codes then post them here. the person that helped you the first time does not know what they are doing because if they did they would have figured out the fuse issue while you were there.

you need the tool. Do not just yank it off.......here is a link showing how to do it go to post #15

I use a tool form Performance tool #W83130 There are similar ones they are bout $8

for the "most part" the after cat sensors just read info. They do not effect engine management( I know some peeps will argue with me) the precat sensors do effect engine management and could create a loss of power.........if you have a Costcos near you and are a member I got a codereader from them for $20. it is handy because sometimes the codes are just pending and never set the CEL off. if you own the codereader you can randomly check when the truck acts up...... check the CATS after you have been driving and see if they are super hot, even glowing!
