I can just be driving along and suddenly it just dies like the key was turned off. It won't restart with the clutch but will with the key. Starts right up immediately. It's random and happens in various weather and driving conditions. 87 Ranger 2.0, 5 speed.

bypass the inertia switch and see if it's intermitently cutting off fuel.

Wasn't the 2.0 only available in a carburated model? If so, then there wouldn't be any such swich, since there was a mechanical pump.

I'm having a similar problem with my 88 2.0, only it won't start at all. Could be ignition-system related, that's what I'm checking.

Correct, it has a carb. It almost has to be an electrical issue since it has a mechanical fuel pump which is brand new. It runs very good except for this little quirk. And it's random like I said. It did it three times today but hasn't done it for several weeks.

didn't know =]. but hey at least that leaves less things that could be wrong. maybe just a faulty ground somewhere... id start by cleaning all the grounds and making sure they're secure.

Two things that I found on mine that would cause it to either not start or to cut out...the little clip-on boot that goes on the solenoid switch on the passenger side inner fender...if that is loose or not connected you will not be able to start the engine...and the ground wire that goes to the starter...if that is not tight you could loose all power to the engine...and they have a tendency to come loose with vibration...

Both my Ranger and my Tempo gave me problems with starting for those two things...and if it's not that then as has been mentioned above...check all ground wires and also the connectors on the drivers' side...they can also come loose and kill the power to the system...

I would check the ignition control module - it may be overheating and shorting out - then as soon as it cools down it will start back up

Ignition switch could be bad.

If so, you should be able to "make" it shut off by wiggling the switch while it's running.
