TRS 2021 Fall Off-Road Round-Up

What's the deal with needing a license for a radio? The regulation seems a little.. unenforceable? At least difficult to enforce. How would one get caught? Whats the fine?

Over a certain power output, you have to have a license per FCC rules. I think it’s 2 watts and 5 watts depending on the channel being used but I’m drawing from memory.

The FCC has people who monitor the airways and radio hunters to track people down but the chances of getting caught are slim unless you are doing something to irritate a lot of people like harassment, foul language, or blocking the channel by over powering everyone else around you.

As far as fines and penalties, I can’t say for sure on the money side but they can confiscate your equipment.

GMRS

I would prefer that the GRMS had more power. So, maybe I can make this work but I have a GRMS license. So, it's legal for me. Not so much for those who don't have one.

Supposedly there is a 40watt one coming out that style.

Guys last year were saying the GMRS was pretty crowded.

CB used to be the same way but the govt gave up trying to enforce it...

As long as someone in your party (Jim does) has a license you don't need one. You can get walkie talkies that are lower powered for cheap that don't need them and can still talk to those that do (with limited range)

They have one already but not all the controls and the display is not on the mic. With the layout in the 2019+ Rangers, mounting a radio pretty much needs to be mounted under seat.

The Wouxon 1000G with a detachable face might work for under the seat and the face on the ceiling but I’m not sure. I’m going to get one for the 2011 and give it a test fit in the 2019 before I commit.

Between the CB, GMRS, and HAM, I have a lot of options.

Midlands is supposedly coming out with a 40w with the controls in the mic though.

Cool, those are cheap. I'll probably snag a set before September. Somebody else can use the other one if they don't have one

Keep in mind your range won't be awesome so if you wander off and do something stupid... you might be on your own for awhile.

I plan on sticking with the group, that's pretty much why. Really just want the radio to keep up with the banter or whatever lol

That would better. Better yet. Make one that puts out 50 Watts!

I seem to remember one of the reviewers not liking how Midland handles repeaters but I forget the details.

I don’t plan on doing the repeater thing but it may be something in the future and I would hate to limit myself because of software/hardware limitations.

For no more than I use it I might just get the cb with the controls in the mic.

I am going to try to make this event. Depends on work though. Recently started a new job so I don't know if I can get off.

As for comms, I have a couple of handheld CBs. Like this GE 3-5980.
Would they be helpful or not enough range for this trip?

Just stay with the herd and you should be fine. We did kinda spread out a bit and play independantly in an area but there would usually be somebody easily within walking distance.

That is a hell of a website. Did you make that yourself? 5th grade computer lab project?

Nah. The only website I had was my MySpace, GeoCities, Google Sites mash-up in about 8th 9th grade. I found that with a Google search.

I don't intend to get into anything too rough as I gotta drive it back home. So I'll probably be doing as much or more spectating than anything.
