My sons 92 ranger 4.0 started missing and surging under load over the last couple days and getting progressively worse. Truck will start normal and as it warms developes a light miss at idle. It will rev up fine slowly, but if you rev it up quick it stumbles and misses and stays that way till you return back to idle. Driving it will start out fine at a slow acceleration, but about 1/2 throttle it loses power. It feels like it is running out of gas. CEL does blink on and off when the truck is experiencing the problem.

I took a quick look at it today and found the following

Plugs all looked consistent and fairly clean. With a light shade of white residue. Wires looked good, good connections on both ends and not brittle or cracked.

Air filter is new and no obstructions on the dirty side.

MAF sensor looked clean, but I cleaned it anyway.

I dont have a book for it yet, but probably need to get one. I have looked through the Tech section as well as read many posts of similar problems. Pump, Filter, FPR, TPS!!

It really feels like a fuel issue to me, and appears to be consistent to all cyl's.

Any suggestions? Where is the fuel filter located and is it relatively easy accessable?

Its close to a 100 out side right now so I'm just trying to find some starting points for when it cools down.

Thanks in advance..:icon_thumby:

If it feels like it's running out of fuel... It most likely IS running out of fuel! Could be the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, or even the fuel pump itself.

Fuel filter should be inside the frame rail on the drivers side.

Well without the right tools and specific knowledge to trouble shoot the system it went to a shop. They trouble shot it and determined it was the fuel pump. Fuel pump replaced and problem was solved. Runs great now. Not sure if they checked for codes or did a fuel pressure check.

I hate to be a Doubting Thomas , but I would look to see if they actually did pull the tank because from what I've read on TRS, most pull the bed to change the pump. Hate to think they charged you for a pump and only changed the filter. JMHO , your results may vary.

well i figured mine out, the MAF sensor was shot along wth a couple of spark plugs being carboned up.

It was done at a shop where my nephew works, so my son did see them pull the tank. I questioned it as well from what I have read on here. Sounds like the popular choice is to pull the bed.
