There is more to it then that. Whoever is sponsoring the "race" at that time also adds money, parts, gift certs, etc to the pot. You are correct desert racing is not a money making sport unless you are sponsored by someone that is willing to pay you to race and run there name on the truck. Just to be able to go out and do it is enough payback. Racing offroad is also an investment for some. If your parts are race proven and people see that the company grows. Look at Camburg engineering, Giant Motorsports, Blitzkreig, Total chaos etc. If they weren't racing on there stuff or sponsoring people they wouldn't be where they are today. Look at trucks that race in the desert with names like Skyjacker, Procomp, Rancho, Superlift or Fabtech There is not one single part on the race trucks made by any of those manufactures. They are just sponsoring the vehicles for advertisement and it works because it is a good investment for them. The desert scene is still relatively small compared to other motorsports mostly because its very expensive to make these things capable. The cost of the shocks alone can give you a heart attack lol!
