I have a 91 Ford Ranger Super cab . The rear end took a dive and needs to be replaced. I called lots of salvage yards looking for the rear end. it a ( s336s 3 - 55 8.8 0j21 ) i can find them for a 93 and up . But don't know if it will work for a 91. I live in the St Louis area . thank you

Trouble finding the rear axle? I would imagine thayou should find it under the bed a few feet forward of the rear bumper after a brief search :-P

But do a search of the tech library and you will find all sorts of info on the axles that swap out. For your case any 8.8 with 3.55 gears will work. If you do not have 4wd you can go with a higher or lower gear ratio as well but your speedo will be off which can be fixed by changing a little plastic gear.

Hope this helps!

After 1991 year is fairly unimportant. What matters is gearing, and even then only if you have a 4x4 is it truly important.

I think that it is the '93' and up are also a completly/direct swap in for yours. The later ones are an inch wider on either side. Lots have done that and it's hardly noticeble, different back spacing makes it better. Gives you a chance to find one with the gearing and fewer miles, think up to 2009, over that they have disc brakes.

I replaced my 91 7.5 with a 96 8.8. Bolted right in. Took around 2 hours to do. Used the tire jack to get the truck on blocks, then used a 10ft 4x4 as a fulcrum to lift the axle up in place. I got a deal on mine, $50 and included were 3 decent tires mounted on deer hoof rims. Look around and you will find one.

It is 4x4. So i need the 3.55 . I read the tech info on rear axle. It says the 93 & up is 1.5 inch wider. If it will bolt up even tho wider i will do it. But if it can't i will have to rebuild the one i have.

direct bolt in, the rear U joint size changed in '90 (or '89 as my '89 chassis has the big U joint) so other than that just find one with the right gear ratio, you'll only find 3.55's in a Ranger with a 4.0L to help ya out a bit.

Being a MAJOR dick like most of the newbs think I am... Didn't we have almost this very same thread last week? I recommend the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page. I am not really being a dick I am just pointing out that you could have gotten the answer to your question by looking at past posts.
