Hello, I'm seeking techinical help with my transmission problem. I own a 1989 Ranger 2WD XLT extended cab. I believe the trany in it is a FM132. When I bought the truck I noticed a high pitched whining sound whenever I was driving in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears. This being my first Ford, I thought this maybe normal, until a few days ago I lost clutch petal pressure and the trany started making a loud popping noise in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear.
I shut the truck off and checked my clutch fluid thinking I had blown out the slave cylinder. The fluid was full and after pumping the petal a few times regained petal pressure. The grinding still persisted. I then checked the trany fluid to find there was almost none in it and no sign of fluid leakage under the truck. I filled the trany up with 80w90 that the manual said to use. The grinding noise went away, but I still hear the whining sound in all gears but 4th. Is this normal or could there be a bearing going bad? Obviously I have a seal leaking either in the front or rear, but I'm concerned about the grinding popping noise I heard. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
