What is a better transmission to use in a v8? I have a c6 but everybody say it a power hog . Is there a better trans that has over drive without a computer? I have a c4 that needs rebuilt . Just wanted something that not so hard on gas. Thanks joey!
 
The AOD - Automatic Over Drive doesn't need a computer, 4 speed
AODE did, E was for electronic

Automatics have lower MPG than manuals, just the physics of how they work

Best boost for automatics and MPG was when they added Locking Torque Converters.
Automatics loose much of their MPG because by it's nature the torque converter must slip or you could never stop the vehicle with trans in gear.
AOD used a mechanically locking torque converter.

So look at the AOD for MPG
You can get AOD torque converters in Locking and non-Locking, many prefer non-Locking for better power, you will need to read up on opinions to decide whats best for your needs

Manual transmission no computer needed, just a bit of driver input LOL.
 
Build the C-4. They are better for mpg than the 6's. They can be built to handle a lot of power. I run a C-6 as well, but for the low end crawling that I do, it cant be beat (they are tanks and nothing I do is gonna hurt this tranny). If I was to do it again I will use a AOD (thinking about using that a 5.0 and D44&9' in my Samurai buggy)...Good luck and keep us posted...
 
I have a C5 (glorified C4) and am looking to swap to a M5OD out of a 97-03 F-150 with a 4.2.

I don't really beat on it much or tow a whole lot, but I want OD and miss driving a manual trans. And it will be nice to have virtually no cooling concerns.

What trucks had the aod ?
 
Yes, it was a good transmission, the later the model year the better because "they" always make changes as faults show up, rebuilt AOD would have(should have) the latest updated parts
Same basic transmission was used until 2014, 1980-2014, 34 years, so not a lemon :)
In 1992 "they" started adding solenoids for computer control, and rebranded it AODE but same transmission

Carb and fuel injection engines were both used with AODs

Let me get this strait dose the aod have 4 gear plus overdrive or is the overdrive the fourth gear? Thanks joey!
 
3-speed trans with OD for 4th gear

AOD Ratios
First: 2.400:1
Second: 1.467:1
Third: 1.00:1
Overdrive: 0.667:1


Ford did something interesting in the late 1990's with computer control transmissions to get a 5-speed model out of a 4-speed

They added a new "second gear" by leaving 1st engaged and then turning on the OD as the new 2nd gear, giving a ratio of about 1.80:1
So instead of the big jump from 2.4 to 1.4 there was a smoother 1.8 shift and then a shift to 1.4
And it was just computer software that was changed

I assume you changed transmissions and are talking about 4r44/55 becoming 5r44/55. (Technically, couldn't you make a 6r55 with a short 4th by applying OD to the intermediate gearset? low, low + od, intermediate, intermediate + od, direct, direct + od) Ratios would be something like 2.47/1.87/1.47/1.10/1.00/.75; I have to admit hardly worth it, but then again the new 10R80 has some crazy close ratios (9th - 0.68, 10th - 0.63)

Or was there a 5r70 or even a 6r70 version of 4r70w? Or can it be programmed by an SCT tuner or equivalent?

Yes, the 4R's miraculous change to the 5R :)

The gap in ratios from 1st(2.47) to 2nd(1.47) in the 4R was large at 1.00
Turning on OD in 1st got 1.87 ratio with a .60 gap, so smoother, engine doesn't have to REV so high in 1st for shift to 1.47 2nd, and .40 gap to "3rd"(1.47), means less REVing as well.
So winner winner chicken dinner :)

Yes, I guess you could do something similar to Gear Vendors under/over drive unit
Although out side of 1st/2nd the ratios would be quite close together

4R70W only got better ring gear and some minor changes to become 4R75W
never did get the Overdrive shift that the 44E and 55E series did
 
A fuel injected 302 with an E4OD would be my choice. Both can be tuned for mileage and performance................
