Was driving home from Arlington Tx. a month ago when I noticed smoke out the back of my truck. Pulled over and looked underneath to find transmission fluid coming out of the front of my trans and running on to the exhaust . Got it home and next day refilled trans. Have driven it every day since with no more problems. Was this the front seal and if so, should I replace it or wait to see if it happens again. B-4000 V-6 with automatic. 116000 miles on truck and still shifts fine.

The A4LD transmissions are prone to warping when overheating. The bellhousing which is bolted to the body of the transmission encases the front seal. When the transmission gets too hot to the point of overheating the body of the transmission warps (so to speak) and the front seal is no longer true to the transmission and leaks. One fix is and extra transmission cooler inline with the current factory cooler which is located in front of the radiator. So being proactive in not letting the transmission overheat with an extra cooler is good as heat kills an automatic transmission.

if it was a one time thing, I would assume that when you did pre trip and topped off your fluids, you over filled the trans, via checking fluid while it was cold. if it hasnt done it anymore than you burned off enough to the proper level. I wouldnt mess with it till you get a 2nd smokefest
