I am looking at buying a 88 ranger 4x4 2.9
that needs a trans he is asking $800 single cab
good price? also how much would a used trans
run? and would I need the transfer case also?

We need a lot more info and a lot more complete ideas. What kind of trans? What kind of shape is it in? Does it run well? Does it smoke or overheat at all?

I know I tend to low-ball for used vehicles, but I wouldn't pay more than $1000-$1200 for a show-room condition 88 anything, unless it was rare or genuinely valuable. For something you can't drive because it needs a trans, maybe $500-800.


You wouldn't need a transfer case unless it is also blown up.

Prices on used transmissions vary widely based on your local market. Call around to junk yards in your area.
