I have a 89 b2 that you have't to hold it in 1st gear or it pops out sometimes it goes smooth and sometimews it makes a pop sound but as long as you hold it with pressure it will stay in first gear and stay in gear once you get to moving all other gears are fine whats wrong.

Probably a worn shift rail or syncro.
