New to the forum so bear with me!

1988 Ford Ranger XLT

2WD
Automatic Tran - A4LD

I had the truck parked for a year or so. Before that, Everything was working great. I recently got the truck started (just needed a boast, what a beast!) and discovered that the Tranny will not engage in any gear like it should. It will shift into park though.

If I play with it enough (5 mins or so) I can finally get it into a gear. It seems random as to witch gear it finally wants to engage in. I was able to get the truck into drive and drive it around the block with no problems, but I parked and the same problem happened.

I checked the tranny fluid, and it is good.

Any information on this would be great!

As a good starting point, I would check to make sure the linkages are connected properly underneath the truck. Block the wheels and have someone shift through the gears while you are under it. If all is good and working correctly, the next thing to check would be the transmission filter which could need replaced.

Sounds like you need to replace the filter and fluid. Maybe some moisture got its way inside?

Thanks for the replys. It looks like this will have to wait until the summer. Its just tooo cold here already!!
