Can anybody help? I have a 2000 Ranger, 4X4, 3.0 engine. Vehicle just turned 100,000 miles. I have never had any problems with the truck and believe in periodic maint. Transmission was flushed and filter changed by Ford garage at about 90,000. I've noticed that when accelerating from a stop, not always but certainly too often, I hear a whining noise that increases with rpm's. If you let up on the gas, the whine disappears. If you step down on the gas again, the whine may come back but not always. This problem seems to be more prevalent in very cold temps-I live in Minnesota. Could it be the power steering? I'm guessing not but I don't really know.
