hi guys i have a 1999 4cly. Im looking into doing the 5.0L explorer swap from my reading my truck (1999 4cyl) has ABS/VSS on the rear axle, no pats, fuel pressure of 56-72 psi, and no fuel return line...

So if i use the motor and transmission from a 1996-1997 explorer that has vss on the transmission, a fuel return line, and no pats. I will have to run a return line or use 2000+ rail, and use the in tank fuel pressure regulator from the explorer...

So here's my question.

1. I have a 2wd so i will not be using the transfercase . Can i just bolt on a tail shaft?

2. Will doing this solve my abs/vss rear axle to vss transmission conflict if not what do i do?

any tips or advise greatly appreciated thanks in advance

Frankly I'd leave the current rear axle mounted VSS connected to your spedometer
and connect the transmission mounted one (if so equipped) to the engine management.

But on a 4x4 the "transmission mounted VSS" isn't mounted on the trans anyway, but on the T-case.

Can you just bolt on a 2wd tailcone? No.

thanks for the reply AD. I found the 2wd tailshaft on ebay so i figured i would mount the tailshaft then extend the wires that were attached to the transfer case mounted vss sensor splice them into the abs/vss sensor mounted on the rear axle.
does this sound correct?

The transmission output shaft is different, thus my "NO" when you asked about bolting on a 2wd tailcone.

No, means No.

You'll NEED to either find a 2wd 5.0 explorer (they were made)
OR you'll need to get a professional to swap the output shaft for you.

Why a professional? because the ENTIRE transmission needs to be disassembled

thanks AD. ok im really new to modifing ranger trucks in september my dad told me he was giong to get a few ranger trucks and fix them up make a couple of dollars. in october he gave me a 1999 2wd ranger and got a 2000 xlt 2wd for hiself. the next week he got an xlt foglight package from a junkyard for my truck told me it would look good put it on i did. a couple of weeks ago i saw this website on trucks i started reading the next thing you know im at the junkyard i got the sun visors with the lighted mirrors, overhead console with compass and temp, and center console with arm rest and cup holders from an explorer sport put them in looks great. so then i read i can put a 5.0L in pretty much plug and play i was confused about alot of things but a quicktrip to the yard cleared up a few things i found a 19997 explorer 5.0L its 2wd so its got the right transmission and its got the 8.8 rear end with disc brakes somebody got the heads, computer, and radiator i might be able to get everything for about 550

this site is awesome

NO NO NO - you have to continue with the Yoda speak. "put it on I did" is a good start though. "Every thing I can get for $50 about" is good. Sorry - couldn't help it.

"put it on i did" yoda talk lol thats funny

If I were inclined to do a 5.0 Ranger on an EEC-V/OBD-2 (1995-up)
What I'd do would be to go with a 4x4 ranger and use ALL the explorer running gear from an AWD 5.0 Explorer.

frankly any use anyone can come up with for a 5.0 2wd Ranger would
be done FAR better with 5.0 AWD Ranger.

Except winning a burnout contest....

I'm supposed to go to the junkyard with a friend this weekend to
get a 1998 4x4 Ranger frame...

I'm trading him the frame out of my 1993 supercab 4x4
so he can "convert" his 2wd 1995 supercab to 4x4.

What I'm building requires the use of the later SLA-Torsion bar front
suspension as the ranger I'm building will be AWD (I've already got a 4x4
and don't want a 2wd) but I'm using a 2.3Turbo engine and I'm making an
adapter to let me use a 44-04 T-case behind a 5sp Ranger transmission.

what you can do is limited only by your imagination, your knowledge of how the parts fit together and the sickness
of your own inner child.

woooow! dude like i said im new so alot of what you said at this time is over my head. i mean i just thought it would be cool to put a big motor in a small truck. your project sounds really cool i mean i never thought about awd i just saw it as 4x4

so i'll say it in yoda talk "much to learn i have"
