Transmission Trouble

Transmission
Automatic
I got off the highway the other day and was sitting on the exit ramp waiting for the light. The light turns green and my truck won't go. I try again on the next green light and at high rpm's I can get it to move really slow. The truck is a 93 4.0 with an auto and 4X4. There were no big noises or anything. If I shift the transmission into gear I can feel it engage but it won't pull the vehicle.

I am going to pull the transmission on Monday. Could my torque converter or pump have gone out? I really don't know what on the inside of the transmission could cause it to suddenly give up like that but still pull a little at high rpm.

No help? I guess I will just change transmissions and hope for the best.

Sorry man I'm no expert either.

Was the fluid full?

With your vague description of what happened I can see why you got "no help".

How many miles? Have you ever serviced the transmission? Like Schnot asked was the transmission full? What color is the fluid? How is it used? Are you the sole owner of the truck meaning did you buy it new? Had it been acting up prior to this?

Help us and we will help you!

The fluid was full and looks fine. It has about 100,000 on this transmission. The vehicle actually has 250K+. It wasn't acting up. I was driving down the highway and it was fine. Sat at the stoplight and it wouldn't go. I changed the fluid and filter about 18 months ago.

I didn't know what you needed to know. I guess I should learn more about transmissions before I ask a question next time. After searching for hours through old threads and seeing how other people that ask for help are chastised for not asking the question correctly or accused of being too stupid to use the search I was a little afraid to ask for help in the first place. Sorry to annoy you.

I had the exact thing happen to my C3 auto fluid good but no go in any gear. When I took it apart the thrust washers on the rear sprague were gone and the shafts shifted back so it lost all oil pressure. When you change the tranny go ahead and replace the engine rear main seal while it is apart for giggles. Allways put in a new torque converter also the more expensive the better the converter.

In case there is metal floating around flush out the cooling lines. I'm not sure what you have for tools etc. so taking the rad and lines to a shop might be the best way to flush.
Sorry that you felt iffy about posting, that is something that we would like overcome. The following doesn't apply specifically to you; Some people that have been on site for a long time feel frustrated when the same question comes up for the umpteenth time....IDK, maybe they don't realize the new poster most often isn't even aware there is a search button, and the search only works if you ask the right way.
I'm hoping that you're experience here is better than your first impressions.
Good luck,

Richard

Annoyed....not in the least. Knowing how these transmissions are taken care of and how they are used if sometimes all the info we need. With these A4LD's they are temper mental and are not very reliable. Honestly 100,000 miles is about lifes end for them anyway. If you are going to a yard to get another transmission ask them for a warranty. If you have the funds get the one that you pulled out rebuilt and ask the rebuilder to get the high end parts for it as they take a little more abuse than just factory replacement parts.
