This is a swap question, and I have NOOOO idea what the response here will be....

For my 2000 4X4 ranger

If my 4.0 is toast for one reason or another....

I have a spare 5.0 and a 4R70W with a 4WD tailshaft, and a spare 00 V-8 AWD Explorer ECU...

This was out of an AWD Explorer, not a part time one...

I assume there is no 'easy' way to just drop in a 00 Explorer ECU, the 5.0 motor, and attach my transmission the the electronic 4X4 X-fer case....? *I've done a swap to my 98 as a 2WD and it was fairly easy... but does the 4R70W bolt right up to the ranger X-fer case?

What controls the 4X4 X-fer case in my 00 Ranger? Is it just the dash-mounted switch, or is there something in my ECU that handles it as well?

Nope no easy way, best thing is to get a divorced trans case or an AWD version from the exploder at the local jnkyard. THe difference is, and someone will correct me if im wrong I hope. But hte AWD version is a differential type transfer case where at the electronic is not. It is either in 4wheel or it aint. it cant shift on hte fly above 20 mph like the exploder version can.

your gonna need the 4406 out of that explorer, along with the gem module possibly, i'm not sure how much the 4406 is controlled by electronics, i think its completely self contained

Mine can shift on the fly to 4X4 HI.... Mine is a 'late' 2000 model without the pulse hubs.

Yours has the fulltime locked front hubs. NOt sure teh technical name but you also have the differential style transfer case nothing from 96 older will mount to your transmission. Least not that I know of. All the newer explorers from 98 up and possibly 96 and up have the AWD. Neither nodel of 1354 will mate to these.

if the 1354 wont bolt up , then neither will the 4405 from the 96 and up explorer v6's with auto 4wheel drive because they are the same pattern as the 1354

Thats teh info I didnt have. Like I said-- to my knowledge. Common sense thinking says if they bolt patterns are the same then maybe htey will work. If IM wrong Im wrong. Its all in hte tech library I think. Maybe Ill go read it lOL>

i just learned this recently myself lol, i bought a 98 explorer v6 with a bad transfercase, my spare 94 ranger 1354e bolted right in and worked until i got the right 4405 transfer case and swapped it in. but in my searching i learned that the 4406 that came in the v8 awd explorers were a different bolt pattern

It's basically a choice of having the full time AWD that you would have with the 4404 from the Explorer or having the selectable 4x4 xfer case, 4406, from the Expedition/F-150. Bob R has some good info on the 4406 swap in the tech library on how to make it work. Also mentions an Advance Adapter to use your stock xfer case but don't think they're sold anymore. I know of several who have gone with the AWD and just love them.
