transmission to swap questions

ive decided that once my a4ld finally goes im gonna do a 5 speed swap, never doing anything with transmission and being broke i have a couple of questions. i apologise if these have been asked before. i have a extended cab 3.0 so my questions are. i know from my reserch i will need the transmission, computer, clutch, flywheel, and pedal assemble, is there anything else? what are the proper steps? is the swap truley worth the involvment? what transmissions will work/ be best? also deos anyone have a rough estimate of what the swap would cost?

Your options are limited. The 3.0's version of the M5OD is about the only thing that will work. 3.0 was originally designed for the Taurus and put in the Ranger as an after thought. As a result there is really only the one RWD/4WD trans for it.

Steps are basically, remove old trans and associated wires, remove flex plate, install flywheel (you will need flywheel bolts, flex plate bolts are shorter), clutch, and trans. Basically, go buy a Haynes manual and follow the steps for replacing the clutch.


As for total cost, that's a hard one. When I did my M5 swap the transmission turned out to be about half the cost of parts. The cost of the trans can vary by a couple hundred depending on where you are, who you deal with, and other various factors.

ok thanks. its definantly in the future plans. im just trying to figure out the money situation now but i figured a 5 speed would have to be cheaper then a $1300 a4ld rebuild
