transmission swaps?

i have a manual transmission in my truck that i love, but i want to use it for rock crawling, and its kind off an inconvenience, but im not sure if i want to put an explorer trans in it because ive heard that they are prety crappy. what other options do i have?

And explorer trans properly set up and maintained
(be sure there is actually oil in it) are usually fairly robust.
