Transmission swap troubles

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger 4x4 short bed that I swapped the FM145 out for an FM146. I am down to installing the rear Drive shaft and I discover that the fuel tank is in the way? Not sure how this is possible as the trucks all have the same fuel take in the short bed standard cab modle?

Any thoughts?
