I'm swapping a 5.0 from a 1998 explorer in to my 1996 ranger and I want to run a 5-speed transmission I'm swapping the dash and everything in to the ranger for the pats and to make sure everything should work correctly but has anyone on here ran a standard transmission or figured out how to do your neural safety and reverse lights and will the motor still run correctly like this?

The '98 computer will be for automatic so won't have the feedback from manual trans it needs, CEL will stay on, but you can drive it.

Fuel system will need to be changed '96 will have 40psi system with return line, '98 will have 65psi without return.

You will need to find an F-150 with 5-speed manual, and transfer case if 4x4 is wanted

98 was still return fuel, so thats plug and play. 99 is when the explorer went returnless. Swapping dashes isnt required, just the pats module and transceiver. You will need the ecu, pats module, pats transceiver and ignition keys for the motor to fire. If you dont have all of these components, you will have to source them then introduce them to the ecu. For this usually a trip to the dealer is needed, however, I have the ability to do this.
If you decide to swap the dash wiring harness, you will still have some wiring to do to the rest of the vehicles circuits...

I want to change the dash to cause I'm changing the interior the ranger has blue and I want to swap to gray why do I need a f 150 transmission I have a t5 with the advance adapters piece to run a ranger transfer case should that be ok and what is the CEL? What will that affect and can I still wire up a neutral safety going this route?

CEL-Check Engine Light...
You can run it as it is, wiring in the NSS is not that hard. You will have random idle issues as the ecu searches for trans functions. You can run a T5 with the adapter, it wasnt mentioned cause its not a common swap...

Oops, I thought Ford swapped both to returnless in '98, good info

Yes, you can either solder together the NSS wires so no neutral safety switch, or you can run them to a Clutch switch which was standard on manuals.

I will hook the neutral safety up just took be on the safe side is there any way to get around the computer looking for the transmission stuff I don't want a automatic but would like for everything to work properly

What's your opinions on running the t5 or the f150 5-speed what would you guys recommend

If 2wd, the T5. If 4x4, the R2 or ZF5...

The M5OD-"R2" in '97-'02 F-150 with 4.2l V6 will bolt right up to 5.0l V8, and it's shifter is in almost the same place as M5OD-R1 used in Rangers.

Get the transfer case with the R2 as Ranger transfer case won't fit R2

If you have the adapter, hope the Jeep tail housing came with it and all the internal parts that need changing, runs over $400 to have it changed. T-5 meant more for car like performance while the M5OD suited more for 4x4 use.

Ok thanks for all the help guys I might just go that route!

Just a thought but is there a manual transfer case that will bolt to the explorer transmission if I were to go that route?

Good read indeed thanks for the help guys!
