I have a 1998 ranger 4.0 with the 4R44E bolted up to it (orginally 4cyl)

i have a problem with the car going into drive, takes about a min.
and when im driving 2nd to 3rd i get a slip and i let off to let it catch.

also noteworthy experice the other day i hop up into the truck to grab my lighter and i notice the truck starts to roll backwards... i get out and push it and it pops a few times and then i removed the gear from park to neutral back to park. and couldnt move it again. my driveway doesnt really even have a slope to it.

is the tranny fried?

Fluid looks to be burnt to me. just bought the truck.

should i change the fluid? Mercron v i believe?

or Rebuild the tranny?

or Replace the tranny with a beefier 4r55e?

or swap a manual into it?

burnt fluid is never a good thing, you could try swapping the fluid, though honestly, it's probably too late... it's probably low too... have you checked the level?

level is fine. but i think the person i bought it off of, mixed transmission fluid, i found a bottle of dextron2 in the back so....

im going to change the fluid today. i will let ya know if it makes any difference.

Transmission blew up. looking to replace it.
