Hello, 1999 V6 Ranger extra cab 3.0 flex fuel I think my trans is a 4R44E
Once in a while ( maybe three to four months apart ) i've had transmission slip
off take off, then work fine. Fluid is red, not burnt, and full. Where should I start looking? Would a fluid/filter change help?

Sounds like you're starting out in failsafe mode or second gear starts. Is your overdrive light flashing or does it flash when this is happening. Get it scanned any transmission or a competent repair shop not just a code reading at a local auto parts store. You'll need to look for pending codes or history codes and see what is being set to cause the failsafe. Let us know what you find.

If your transmission was worn out it would slip all the time not just every few months. I agree with the other guy must be a faulty code.

Update trans slipping

so tranny was fine until monday 3/14 after 30 miles freeway driving, started
to slip again, (or should i say flare?) 4r44e tranny 99 ranger 3.0
it would do ok if i shifted manually. I ordered new VB seperator plate gaskets
and decided to put in a shift kit. from TRANSGO ill change filter of course.
any thoughts? is this an over reaction?
this thing never threw any codes.
