Transmission ????'s

I'm new to the forum & just picked up a 1985 4X4 Ranger . It has the 2.8 V6 with auto trans & manual shift transfer case . There are no visible letters at the transmission shifter but there seems to be 4 forward notches . The transmission is shot/slipping & needs replaced/rebuilt . Anyone know what transmission I have & what transmissions out of what models will fit ? What is a reasonable price to have the trans. rebuilt if I remove & replace it myself ? Thanks in advance .

If it's a 4 speed before 1995 it's an A4LD.

The tech section has a pretty good section for identifying transmissions.

What you'll end up paying for a rebuild depends on where you take it. It might be $800, or it might be $2000.
