Alright so i am new here and i hope im posting in the right location. I have a 1990 ranger with a 4.0 in it auto sadly but thats just for now. Anyways onto my question. I want to find a manual transmission that will bold up to my 5.0 i am swapping in preferable something with the lowest gearing for 5th as to gain the highest highway speeds that or a 6speed. Oooh is there a way to have an overdrive on a manual transmission. Long winded but thank you for any input you have. Also im most likley will be boosting the 5.0 so the transmission has to be fairly strong :P

I take it this is a 2wd truck? The easy choice would be a T5 from a mustang. All the 5 speeds I know of are overdrives. With the correct bellhousing there shouldn't be a reason you would not be able to use a T56 from say a vette or viper either. Any of the truck based transmissions aren't what I would say sport oriented so you will be looking for RWD car transmissions.

Yes 2wd. And alright thank you very much

Lower gearing= lower highway speeds. And yea pretty much every single 5 speed is an OD. 4th is usually 1:1 and 5th is OD. 6 speed trannys are usually a double overdrive.

Actually, the 6-speeds that Ford used were just narrow range transmissions. The ZF5 and ZF6 have the same top OD ratio.

For use in a Ranger the M5OD is generally the best bet.

Which trans is that? Would the 5spd out of a stang with the 3.8 bolt up to the 302?

If you are going to make a 2wd street truck I can't say the an M5 truck transmission is the best choice. If this were a 4x4 the M5 would be an excellent choice. Easiest to put in I'll agree on that. A 3.8 mustang will have a T5 and yes it will bolt to a 302. You are still going to want to look for a V8 T5. A WC T5 will hold 350 about ft lbs the other versions aren't rated that high.
