Ok I have a 99 xlt and the trans shifts hard in all gears. I changed the fluid and filter. There are no codes or warning ligths. Also when you take off or stop it feel like the drive train slides forward and when you stop it feels like it slides back. I thought maybe bad u-joints but they do not seem to have any slop in them. Any ideas as to where to start will be appreaciated.

What you are describing about moving forward and backward can only be motor and tranny mounts..

when my speed sensor was going bad, it behaved just like you described. Hard shifts, and downshifts as I came to a stop were brutal. The speed sensor went completly bad soon after, so it was easy to troubleshoot. Mine was easy to fix, just the speed sensor located on top of the rear diff. Mine only has the 2 wheels anti-lock brakes, however. My local mechanic told me that the rangers with 4 wheel anti-locks also have a speed sensor in the trans that is a real bear to replace. Try to get the trans scanned, not just the engine.
