Transmission Question

I have a 96 b23 with the M50d-R1 trans. I can not find any definite specs for how much torque it can safely handle. I'm looking to put a 5.0 in the truck and I'm wondering if I can rebuild the trans stronger or have to get a new trans. Any help is greatly appreciated.

you will need to get a new trans, that m50dr1 will be trashed by that 5.0 so just sell it and get a c4 or similiar depending on the donor engine make.

A 5.0 won't even bolt up to a 2.3 trans. Remember, this is a Ford, they used about 4,261 different bellhousing bolt patterns throughout the years. You need a trans that came out of a V8 vehicle.

Exbass is right. Ranger is only slightly less so.

The M5 is a very strong trans. The SOHC version would probably stand up to a 5.0 for a while, since at peak breaking (getting you rolling) torque the 4.0 SOHC and the 5.0 are pretty equally matched. But eventually your 5.0 would break that trans.

The bigger problem is as exbass said, the trans simply won't bolt to a 5.0. There is no removable bell, there is no adapter to make it happen.

Look for a Tremec T-5 out of a 150, then go look for a 2wd, manual S-10 with the BW T-5 and take it's tail housing. Both versions are almost the same thing, and that tail shaft housing will make it fit like it's supposed to be there.
