Transmission
Manual
So I've been looking at a bronco II for a trail rig :headbang: but the transmission is blown. So what should I swap in a manuel or auto? (I have a manuel in my ranger) If I do a manuel should I go ahead and put in the 4.0 clutch? I plan to do some rock crawling if this helps. The seller wants $350 for it but the body and interior are nice is this a decent price?

P.S. i'm not sure if the orginal transmission was a manuel or auto sorry

Thanks welder0800

definitely go for the 4.0 clutch if you go manual. Worth every penny, and it's not that many pennies if you're replacing the clutch anyway.

I've not had an RBV with an auto so can't comment.

While the A4LD is a good transmission for general purpose use? It DETESTS "Hard Use". Unless you get the heavy duty full rebuild? I'd steer clear of it.

With a decent trans cooler, a rebuilt A4LD will do fine.

+1... I like manual for the reliability (stronger, roll starting, etc...) aspect, but I also don't do any rock crawling, my truck is just to get me to more remote places and back reliably... If this is a trail rig though, I'd say an auto is usually easier to drive off road...

I'd still urge a heavy duty rebuilt one (with the noted changes in suspected weak parts)...and when looking at a cooler? Look at one you think will do the job great--and get the next larger size LOL.

No argument with that. Seems to me you can install a thermostat in the trans cooling system, though. I'd suggest that if putting a huge cooler in there to ensure that it stays at an optimum temperature rather than being overcooled under typical driving conditions.
