we were driving on the highway yesterday and the transmission started leaking fluid and smoking behind the truck, and when i pulled over and was idling it was hemorrhaging from between the bell housing and the block, does this mean that the front pump seal is toast? or is it the converter gone bad?

I'd say pump seal. You gotta take the trans out anyway though.

Dam...Had that happen in my Bronco II twice...not pretty, hopefully you didn't toast the trans, like I did, before shutting it down. As said above..you are going to have to pull out the trans anyway...and if it has alot of miles..you have it out you might as well freshen it up. Just make sure you go to a good shop and do some research so you get a proper rebuild, not just some soft components.

Check for an obstructed vent line before you panic.

Mud dauber wasps like building nests in them and then when the trans heats up it pukes fluid out the front seal.

yeah, im gonna be pulling the tranny out to replace the pump seal tomorrow, one good thing does come from this though, i was wanting to get all the old transmission fluid outta the trans anyway and i need to change the modulator too

The very reason I got rid of the auto. Also check the cooling circuit for any restrictions a kink in the line or one of those inline filters that's slightly plugged. That puts pressure behind the seal and rolls the lip out or pushes the whole thing out.Took me a lot of walking to figure that out.

Are you sure it is transmission fluid leaking? There is also a rear main seal that would leak engine oil out in that same location.

I'll bet it's tranny fluid.Smoke hemorrhaging fluid stuck beside the road that's the A4LD experience. The only thing missing is tranny fluid dripping off his dirt bike and trailer.

make surer when you do your front pump the bearing is goo for the fron pump mine was out and kept kuting mine took me 3 trys to get that figured out

yeah im sure its tranny fluid. im gonna see about dropping it in the morning before work, and isnt there supposed to be a magnet in the tranny pan? cause this one doesnt have one and i had to fix a kinked cooler line last week too, and ill check the bearing whilst ive got it apart too
