i have a 87 ranger stx and the thing is horrible on gas i was wondering if traveling at 65mph and the rpms were at 3500 is that normal? any help would be great thanks robert (pa)

Depends on a lot of things... Gearing is one.. Is the truck stock?

It sounds about 1,000 RPM too high, at least my 2.9 5-speed runs around 2450rpm at 65.

RPM's sound like they need to be 1,000 revs lower. Is your tranny an automatic or manual? May want to confirm what axle ratio you have and see if the tires are correct size?

sounds like someone swapped the rear. bet it pulls good like that though...

yeah, I have 3.45 gears and I only turned 25-27Rs (depends on the day) when I was running 65 before I put the 4.0 tranny in.

thanks guys for the info so now i know its about 1000 rpms too high it has 31 inch tires on it and its an automatic. should i take it to a garage cause this thing drinks the gas down. great forum and thanks rob from freeland pa.

hay adsm08 did you put that 4x4 shifter in your truck? cause i have that horrible push button. is there a way i can place a shifter in and get rid of that button crap?
