hi. im new..
i just bought a 4.0 5 speed ranger. heres my problem. ill try to explain the best i can.
i was driving in 4x4 low, all was fine. no noises nothing. i decide to downshift as i slow down, and the shifter dosent want to move... i step on the clutch, feels like it dosent exist. i am in 4th so the truck bogs as i slow, so i shut it off.
i get out, check to see if there is clutch fluid leaking, nope... its full

now the truck is stopped so i can get it out of the gear and move it.. its a little stiff going into all the gears, but it goes in. before i realized the clutch wasnt working, i tried to start it. it jumped a little, and i stopped.

here is the weird part *if i put the tranny into neutral, and put my foot on the clutch, it just clicks and wont turn it over*
to sum it up...

the truck will roll in neutral.
will not roll in a gear.
engine jumped trying to start in gear(clutch dosent work) but now just clicks, including neutral

any ideas?
my theory would be maybe the starter is bound up, so it wont turn the motor over, from trying to start it in gear? but this dosent explain the clutch problem.

when i replaced my clutch it did the same thing, it turned out that my slave cylinder wasnt functioning, so i had to replace it. make sure there isnt any air in your clutch hydraulic lines and also make sure that the clutch master cylinder reservour didnt run out of dot 3 and suck down a bunch of air.

check to see if the rod is still conected to the clutch pedal

No leaks would point towards air in the system. Also as a former 89 Escort GT owner (wonderful car) check the clutch pedal in degrees of engagement to see if the starter relay at the pedal is to blame for not turning over.

Good luck

there is plenty of fluid in the clutch m/c, and dosent seem to leak. the starter relay clicks, so i dont think there would be a problem on the clutch pedal.
the pedal isnt really easy, bu you can tell it dosent feel like its compressing the pressure plate.

For the starting issue, if it clicks it sounds like everything is connected, I'd check the battery. I've seen really dead batteries unable to jump start. If the starter is bound a few light taps on the starter or rotating the engine by tool at crankshaft or pushing the truck back and forth in gear might release this. For the hydraulic clutch if all is intact down to the operating rod at the slave a rebleed may be necessary. A little air will expand when the system warms up. Bleeder screw at the slave is pointing straight up?

Good luck

http://www.explorer4x4.com/bleed.pdf this link might be helpful, if your going to bleed the clutch, be very thorough, it took me nearly two large bottles of dot 3 to get it done.you may not be able to completely bleed the hydraualic system, but even if it shifts rough you can still drive and after a day or two, it should purge the excess air from the system.
