Transmission or Transfer Case?

Hello All and please forgive any newbie or lack of knowledge statements I may make as I am a shade tree mechanic...

I have a 1990 Ranger 4wd 2.9L / A4LD Transmission / 1354 Transfer Case.

Driving home (15 minutes after purchasing) at about 30 -35mph I heard a clunk, and then had no transmission (?).

First, I thought transmission...then I thought maybe rear (even though clunk sounded like it came from underneath me). I tried locking it in 4wd...locked the manual hubs...and still...whirrrr....nothing! No forward...No reverse...nothing.

My question is....Tranny or Transfer gears? Is there a simple way (I know..quit laughing nothing is ever simple) to rule out or peg it as the transmission?

I can pull either or both from a scrap yard near me...better (or easier) to just get both and attach them...then pray?

I have never done anything with a transmission, so I am a bit beyond my comfort level, but willing to bloody some knuckles trying.

Thanks all...Great Site!

Sounds like transmission. they are fun to change. there are many threads in this section and in the tech library that will help get you through it.

If you feel like putting another auto in get another A4LD( you will need one from a 4x4) from a 4.0 they are tougher then the one you have.

If you want to go manual transmission get a M5OD--R1 (you will need one from a 4x4) Over all a better transmission then the A4LD. But more work to install.

Thanks Nhaz

I was praying someone wasn't going to confirm what I suspected....dang.

Thanks for chiming in....off to those posts.

A few things I would check first, trans fluid level, T-case slector shaft pointing at A gear( even eletronic t-cases have nutral betwine 4H & 4L), see if you have broken spiders in your diff.(set your parking brake and put it in drive), Drop your t-case and see if your tail shaft and or t-case coupler is in one piece.

thats the only things I could think of that would pop and act like its in nutral, hope it helps.

Thanks!

Thanks Viper! I appreciate your response as well as your input on others similar posts. I spent the day yesterday reading through the entire 10 pages of posts in the trans section, and saw you quite a bit. It was extremely helpful.

I guess it's off to get my knuckles bloody here soon!
