post update

Ok seems I need to put a bit more info about my truck . It is a 1991 Ranger 4.0 automatic AL4D trans 1354 eletric T-case stock rear end

hmm, It could be the case but that's an odd thing to have happen. I hate it when something like this happens!

I hate to say it but you could bring the transfercase down and put it on a bench to see if you can create the sound. You could also put it on jackstands and spin it by hand to see if you feel anything grabbing at all.

Check the fluid too. Is it leaking at all?

It could be one of many things. Just make sure to have transfluid available if you are going to take that case off. It's heavy but that's the only hard part about removing it. I hope it's nothing major!

Yep it is very odd I have it on jack stands now get nothing seems to only do this at a cruse speed and sometimes at a in town speed t-case locks in high and low range no grinding or anything but I can grab the drive line and rotate it back and forth and get some noise just a clang? seems to b ok as far as the play but nothing hanging up this is what has me so puzzled have had the t case out when I put a tranny in but it seems to be in good order I did check the fluid had to add about a quart which from what I understand the t- case does not hold much more than that thank you for the input anything will help

I know it might be daunting but i would open the transfer case then. Maybe the chain is stretched..

Well still no luck duplicating the problem guess at this point I need a diagram of the t-case if you might know where I can get one that would help I still hope that some where someone has had the same issue gonna get a another t-case and hope that's the problem thank you for the input

Might be the rear end, I have a 93 Ranger with a 7.5 rear that blew out the cross pin in the differential carrier , it felt like it was real notchy coming out of third or fourth , like real notchy just before it blew...haven't put the replacement diff in yet so there may be another problem ...but I doubt it.

Was the four-wheel-drive engaged at the time? if so sounds like to chains popping

We'll kona would the rear end do the same thing at a lower rpm and the the t-case is not locked in it seems to b going in and out fine would the chain still do that with it disengaged at a higher speed

so have decided to pick up a t-case and hope that is the prob thanks for the input send a post when done hope it works

Update on the ranger it was the transfer case for sure made a vidio put it on YouTube not sure how to post it on the thread thanks for the help I'm sure I'll b back later
