Hey guys, I got a 1989 ranger 4x4 with 49,000 miles. It was a one owner when I bought it, but the clutch was slipping. Changed the clutch and noticed the transmission making a grinding noise plus when you let out on the clutch it's not smooth. It feels like its jumping. At a loss! Open to all suggestions.

Nice find id like to see pics. Did you change the pilot bearing, check clutch resevoir and trans fluid?

Grinding noise could be a bad input shaft bearing. But the clutch not being smooth indicates to me a possible throwout bearing issue. Hope this helps.

I want to add one more thing as I don't know your skill level: Did you possibly put the clutch disc in backward? believe it or not even experienced mechanics have done this not paying attention/ in a rush. it does happen

Sorry so late but been out of town for awhile. I changed the pilot bearing, the throw out bearing and the disc is in correctly. It mostly does it in 4th and 5th and you can hear it a little in 3rd. Kind of sounds like noisy synchronizers. Open to all suggestions.

Drain and refill the transmission lube. I did a clutch job on the Rat. My only mistake was re-using the transmission. Less than 5 K Miles after the clutch R+R, The shift fork broke and dropped into the gears. 1400$ later, the Rat runs better than ever.:D

What engine? 89 seems to be a change-over year for trans type...

If 2.9, I would grab a 4.0 M5OD from a 4.0 4x4 and call it a day. May also need shifter/etc...but should bolt up-ish. :)

It's a 2.3 and already has a M50D. I am jut perplexed that it started doing it after the clutch R&R. Just dropped it changed the clutch, pressure plate and slave, then put it back in. It's driving me batty.
