I have a 1989 BII with the stock FM146 5sp tranny. Last year when I purchased it I put in a new flywheel, clutch kit, slave cylinder etc. I was getting a noise a few months later that sounded like a throwout bearing. Now, I get a noise that sounds pretty bad. It's like a gear grinding noise, but I only get it when in first, second and third. Soon as I hit fourth and fifth the noise is gone.

Any ideas? I only put about 3500 miles on it in the last year. I only drive it for fishing/hunting trips. And my brothers borrow it for the same.

Probably transmission bearings.

The FM146 isn't worth tearing it apart. Look for an M5OD-R1 and replace it. The FM146's are worse than rebuilding on automatic!

What are the years and models I would get an M5ODR1 out of? Do I have to change to the 4.0L flywheel and starter or can I leave the 2.9L stuff there?

Find a 4.0 donor and get everything that you can. It makes the swap easier.

That would be ideal to find a 4.0L donor... but that didn't answer my question... do you need the 4.0L flywheel, clutch and starter or is that just an "upgrade" to do while doing the M5OD swap?

My response reflected to your question when I said to "Get Everything".

But yes get everything and use it all.

Then for me it's not worth doing the swap. I purchased the thing for $350 and I'm now in it pushing $1k... to get a donor I'd be in it another $7-900... I'll just see what I can find for another FM 146 I guess... or drive this till it quits and sell it... which is too bad cause I get killer fuel economy for what I do with it...

90 through 99 will have the trans you want.

You can leave the 2.9 clutch and starter if you please, but if you are doing a clutch job anyway, I'd put a bigger one in if I could.

And don't bother with the 4.0 for now. Do the trans now because yours is going, wait for the engine to blow, then do the 4.0 swap. If you have the M5OD in already, you will be ready to go.
