Have an oil leak at the shifter where it goes into the transmission on the drivers side ( 2009 fx4), just wondering how hard they are to replace. Guessing drop the transmission pan and remove the shaft to replace the seal but haven,t done it before so any guidance would be appreciated.

Pretty basic straight forward repair with one big “got ya “ the shaft won’t come out through the case without removing a spiral wound roll pin that is buried in the pan rail of the case directly below it. Real pain in the butt to remove sometimes just be careful not to scar up the pan rail where gasket seals. Seen people try removing the seal from the outside and break the case or at minimum gouge up the shaft to where a new seal will still leak. Tip if you can leave the range on the shaft you probably can get it done without purchasing a new one. If you try and take it off the shaft 9 out of 10 times it will need replaced.
Good luck
Brad

Thanks Tasman, so is this roll pin exposed enough to remove it and does it need replace also.

Usually won’t need replacing but can prove to be difficult to get a grip on it. It is exposed once the pan is removed but is recessed in a small hole.
