Hey, i found a 91 4x4 manual trans explorer but i need to know what transmission will be in it. How do i find out. Im probably going to go look at it tomorrow.

Im sick of my automatic puking on me(i ask for it by being cheap tho haha). I want this thing for a manual transmission swap.

yup, and its a good transmission too. i just put one in my truck :D

Sweet, thats what i want to hear! Im sick of this A4LD crap, if im going to spend money its going to be well spent on a real transmission.

Parts i will need are

- Computer
- Transmission and directly related(clutch, slave ...etc)
- steering column
- pedals
- CPP switch
- rewire backup lamps
- transmission tunnel cover

Am i missing anything, seems like a weekend job to me.

Parts i will need are

- Computer Not really, but it will run better with a manual computer
- Transmission and directly related(clutch, slave ...etc)
- steering column No, you don't need to. Get the column trim and the shift indicator block off for the instrument color (gen2 and newer) It will cover the auto column just fine when you remove the shift arm.
- pedals Make sure they match year wise with the vehicle and slave
- CPP switch Leave it on the slave when you pull it
- rewire backup lamps Pull the trans harness from the donor.
- transmission tunnel cover Leave it with the shift boot when you pull the trans.

:bye: I converted my Explorer.

good info totalled! i converted my truck too but it looks like the older trucks are a little easier. i went from an a4ld to an fm145 to an m5od over about a year or so...

K got the truck, time to swap! Going to pull apart the manual trans explorer tomorrow after work, and probably put it in the other explorer on monday after school. Thanx guys!

Don't forget to check those pesky rubber shift rail plugs while you're under there!

good point, mine were leaking. i didnt do anything about it cause i was in such a rush to get the truck done but i can get to them from inside the truck so the plan is to clean them and rtv them in there.

Yeah doing something is better than nothing at all! If you wanted to use the freeze plugs on them I know i've gotten them from my local napa before for like 60 cents a piece (Dana #219-3052) so yours may have them. But either way atleast you're doing something about it.

i dont know what your talking about... but im sure i will find out when i pull the transmission tomorrow.... Ive been having fun bootin around in a manual transmission 2door exploder. Got it stuck out in the field when i found out the hard way the front hubs are fucked. Oh well it was fun anyway.

:haha: sweet...

anyways, theres 3 rubber plugs that are behind the shifter. they get old and sloppy and start to leak fluid. this is the biggest reason anybody has any problems with this transmission. theres an article in the tech library about how to replace these rubber plugs with steel freeze plugs. i was just gonna clean mine up and rtv them in place so they can still be (easily) removed if ever need be. not to mention that now that my trans is in the truck, theres not much room to swing a mallet. you will see what im talking about once you get the truck apart. its nothing difficult, but it is fairly important.
