Im pretty sure I have the Mazda M50D-R1. But my starter is on the drivers side and all the ones I see at the junkyard are on the passenger side! Does it matter or do I have another tranny. I checked the tech section and I cant figure it out.:icon_confused:

2.9l right?

The 2.3l has the starter on the pass side. (Wont work)
The 2.9l and the 4.0l have the starter on the driverside and use the same bolt pattern, different 1st gear ratios.
The 3.0l, I dont know which side the starter is on, but it wont bolt up anyway. (Maybe someone else will chime in with what side the 3.0l starter is on.)

i have a 2.9 and according to the tech page its a m50d-r1. The only thing that is throwing me off is the starter. Mine is on the driver side and all the ones i find are on the passenger side. I believe in 1988 is when they first started the m50d-r1 is it possible they switched it after that year to the passenger side. I just wonder if I could use a tranny with starter on pass.

On my 93 3.0 M5OD the starter is on the driver's side.

No you cannot use any transmission with the starter on the passenger side. If your engine is the 2.9 then the ONLY transmission that you can use is the one for the 2.9 or the 4.0. No others will work as the bell housings are different.
