Transmission help needed

I have a 2006 4x4 automatic ranger Xlt 4.0v6 and I can barely accelerate when I try to it stutters I have to put it in 1styour to get going then 2nd then drive...what route should I go to fix this?

keep in mind i prefer a stick and also want to convert this to 5 or 6speed(if i can find one)

Do a search on 4r44e or 5r55e rebuild diaries,,there are a few issues with these auto's that these pages deal with.
