Hi, im new to the site and have a question about the ranger i just bought. I have a 1992 Ranger XLT with 88k original miles. The guy I baught the car from took very very good care of this car. Im not sure if a transmission flush was part of his routine upkeep though. I keep getting opinions back and forth about getting the flush and I of course don't want to ask the shop about it. Should i get the flush or not? please ask for more details if u need them. Like I said im new

auto or manual?

probably hasn't been done... it's hard to say... smell the fluid, and rub a little between your fingers, if it smells burnt, is black, brown, gritty, or not smooth and oily, like transmission fluid should be, then yes...

i don't know what the factory spec is on them, but it's probably around 80,000km, which is about 50,000 miles

i've never done a trans on any of the autos i've owned, but i have done the manual on virtually all of mine

The reason Ive been told this is because the gunk they suck out could unclog a small hole and cause a lot of problems. So im not sure to get it done or not.

you could do the drain and fill method 3 or 4 times or you can disconnect the return line at the rad and keep installing new fluid as the old comes out.....

thanks alot^.Im kind of afraid i might screw something up trying that. Im not all that great at car repairs and matience. Hopefully will be eventually though. sick of shop repairs and cars that are impossible to work on. That's why I bought the ranger. Trying to get the most out of it i can.Whats your opinion though? should i get it done at the shop or is disconnecting the return line pretty fool proof?

A transmission flush will not hurt your trans. It is the exact same thing as unhooking the return line and adding fresh fluid simultaneously. The only difference is the machine automatically pumps the fresh fluid back in. The term "flush" is really a misnomer. It actually is a fluid exchange. Since you just got the truck and don't know what's been done, I would start fresh with new fluid and do the flush (or the line disconnect, like I said, it's the same thing).

On a 92 with 88k on it, since you're not sure it's been done, I would do a filter and pan gasket change first, then do a flush.

is has the benefit of replacing all fluid in the trans. don't goto a place that sucks it out through the dipstick tube. not a good flush.

the ones that hook up in line with the trans cooler lines do a great job of getting things clean. it can take black burnt fluid and turn it into clean bright red fluid in about 30minutes and uses 15-20qts of new fluid.

i've done many trans flushes on many vehicles using the inline machine from BG
