ok i have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 with the 3.0l v6
which trans fluid do i use when i do a tarns service dextron 3 or dextron 4

Do you have a manual or automatic trans??? There's no such thing as Dexron 4. If you have an automatic, use Mercon V ONLY. If you have a manual, use regular Mercon, also known as Dexron III.

he has an Auto. I run Mercon V in my 5 speed.

IMHO. transmissions are so complicated these days that i only run the factory fluid in them. ie in my toyota i only tun toyota type IV. in my ford i would only run the Mercon V as suggested above........some might diasagree with me and that is fine!!!

I have been told that "Meets Mecron V" or Fully Synthetic Trans fluids can cause problems with the Fords. A trans can be near $4000 to replace, 10 or 12 quarts of Mercon V $30 to $50. Which would you prefer to Pay????:icon_idea:

I'm not sure what you mean. Mercon V is the required fluid for that trans. If it says "officially licensed and Ford approved," then Ford actually tested that particular fluid and put their stamp of approval on it.

If it says "recommended for Mercon V applications" or "suitable for Mercon V" that means Ford did NOT test it and may not necessarily approve of it. In this case, the fluid maker, like Valvoline for example, is saying "Well, Ford doesn't exactly approve this fluid, but WE'RE saying it will work fine." Those kinds of fluids you want to avoid.

Key words you WANT to see on the bottle: officially licensed and Ford approved. Synthetic fluids are fine as long as they're Ford approved.
