so i pulled the fill plug on my transmission which is a FM-146 to make sure it was full because i decided to do a full service on my truck..once i pulled the plug a red very thin liquid resembling ATF started dribbling out so i put the plug back in...now is there 80-90 gear oil that llooks like this or did someone put the wrong fluid in it..its definately resembles ATF but im not sure..HELP/:icon_idea:

Personally, I've never seen gear oil that looks like ATF. Not even synthetic. I would GUESS that someone put ATF in it. Again, only GUESSing though.

it does sound like ATF fluid, i'd drain the tranny and get the right stuff to be sure....you may even wanna check your records and see if you can figure out what idiots did this and then NEVER take your truck back to them.

im thinkin its ATF and i was doing the service myself and its the first time ive done it to this truck(rear diff drain and fill, front diff drain and fill, check the tranny and trans case, change oil, change anti freeze, greese all zirc fittings etc)im thinkin the guy before me who had it was a complete jacka** and seen ATF at the store and was like "uhh it says transmission fluid on it so ill buy it durrr"..sorry kinda mad about the whole deal..thanks for the input guys..draining the tranny tommmorow.

If it looks like ATF, it probably is...

Kinda hard to believe someone could goof that up, yet not too surprising I guess.

Ya the previous owner of my truck put ATF in the FM-146 that they had swapped in. Not only was it the wrong fluid but they had filled the whole trans up to the shifter with it.

i dont get people sometimes..even the tech page on here says that the FM-146 is the ONLY type of tranny that comes in the 1988 2.9L 4x4 and it says to put 80-90w in it so i dont get that part..yeah my previous ranger had the tranny filled up to the top litterly, some people just dont get you fill it till it spills out the fill plug..oh well i will get her fixed up real quick like.

IF the Tech page says that the FM146 is the "only" trans
for 1988 2.9 4x4 it's WRONG.

WHICH tech page? Link?
(I really don't have time to look)

The Mazda trans did indeed come on the 2.9 in '88

But that doesn't excuse stupidity.
