Transmission fluid gushing fluid, all of a sudden.

I was planning in making my first post a build thread but this happened today.

Doesn't happen until I start to drive.

The cylinder to the top looks like it might be coming from above it? Is that the shift solenoid? I don't know anything about cars but I am a machinist a can fix whatever. I just need help diagnosing it.

Oh wow, where to begin.

I accept and believe your admission that you know nothing about cars.

1) There is more than one shift solenoid in most automatics. Yours probably only has one true shift solenoid though. The other would be for torque converter lockup.

2) Shift solenoids are inside the transmission, part of the valve body which is accessed by removing the fluid pan.

3) The piece I think you are referencing is the starter.


The A4LD is known for issues with the seal around the pump going bad. It is under a lot of pressure when the engine is running and it can pop out of place when under pressure, then go back once the pressure is removed. This most commonly happens when the trans is overheated, but once it happens the first time it will happen again.

It could also be a bad torque converter seal.

Either way, time to start taking that transmission out.

I really appreciate the prompt response, yes indeed it is the starter. lol. I am going to locate this pump and see if it is the culprit. so the trans has to be separated from the motor even to fix this pump seal?

Ok I've googled and YouTubed the ordeal. It's definitely this shaft seal. Sorry for the premature questions. This looks like a he'll of a job but I can't see why I can't do it.

Anyone have any tips for tricks for me
