Well I'm at the next road block.......

Dropping the 5 speed transmission in my '88 4x4 Ranger. I believe everything is removed and the transmission is ready to slide back and down and out from under the truck, 'cept it ain't. The bell housing will not pull away from the engine. When I pull back on the transmission, and shake it back and forth, the entire engine moves with the transmission, and I cannot create a gap between the engine and the bell housing, even when I put a pry bar between the two and try to (lightly) work them apart. I'm thinking I've missed a bolt between the bell housing and the engine, but dang if I can locate it.

I've removed 4 bolts, one on the upper left corner of the bell housing, one on the upper right corner of the bell housing, one on the lower left corner of the bell housing and on on the lower right corner of the bell housing. I've felt all around the bell housing and cannot seem to locate a 5th bolt.

So my question is; Is there more than 4 bolts securing the bell housing to the engine, and if so, where is that last one located?

Again, I'm sure this is easy, and I'm missing the obvious.:icon_confused:

.

There are two bolts spaced close together at the extreme top of the bell-housing. You might be able to feel them through the engine compartment by running your finger along the top of the bell-housing where it joins to the engine. I took them out with an open end wrench from this position. Good luck.

There are SIX bolts if they were all installed and none have vibrated out, so you are looking for TWO bolts

NOTE on a 4.0 engine there are EIGHT bellhousing bolts.

six in an arc around the top and TWO more at the bottom that screw into the oil pan!!!

Yep, found them. I'd actually removed the 2 close together at the top of the bell housing, and missed the 2 at 10 & 2 O'clock on the bell housing.

Yeah, those two bolts can be a pi&&er to get to. Love my super long extensions for those ones. Glad you found it!!

They couldn't have been too bad or I would have left them out going back in That is my solution to a bolt that needs a 3'+ extension to reach and flex is needed too. One on the cover on firewall. The trans was hung on the engine and the rest of the 528e is hung from that :D
