My 04 Ranger XLT 3.0 4x2 Auto Transmission w/121K. It makes a howling/whining noise that is audible around 35-45 MPH. It rises in tone with speed and only makes the noise when under power. No noise when coasting. Just giving a little gas makes the noise and when letting up on the accelerator it stops.
(I hesitate to use the term "howling" because people rush to say its wheel bearings), but it's not that as the sound clearly comes from under the truck in the transmission area.
Could it be the Differential? Sound seems closer to the cab than at the back of the truck.
