Transmission Confusion

I believe you are correct on this. I believe the current transmission is from a 95 era Ranger, and I am supposed to have a 5R44E.

Now I have to go out and buy another transmission. That's not very fun.

The truck has 33" tires on it, and it feels like it was not regeared. Would you guys recommend 4:56 gears?

4.56 would be bare minimum in my mind. You should find out what gears it has in it now. I would shoot for 4.88 or 5.13's if you are dedicated to keeping the 3.0 in it. I would give up every bit of top speed in that truck in trade for low end/low speed.

that thing is neat.

I do plan to keep the 3.0. It has had some work done on it. Heads ported, equal length headers are what I told was done to it. I would like to keep a top speed of about 75-80 MPH. I mostly want it to have some get-up. It would suck to try and go up a hill and the truck bogs out.

definitely consider a m5od and 5.13gears.

yes....manual 5 speed.

would be tempted to swap in the 2.3 mazda L engine with a 5 speed combo with a turbo for that thing. light and fast.

Down the road, my kid would like to swap the turbo 2.3 I4, from a Mustang. He would go V6, but that is a bit overkill. He doesn't want to be a blur down the street. He just wants to be able to break the wide 33" tires when he takes off.

the later engines like the mazda L.... which the ecoboost is based on from a mustang or modern ranger are really big in terms of space consumed. from a size perspective no different then a 302 windsor... but for sure a bit lighter and good power and economy in relatives and especially emmisions..

Ideally, a V8 would be the 1st choice. However, I live in Cali, so a V8 is not allowed.

yup. good ol cali. my grandpa had a 64.5 mustang he hid in the garage when they wanted to start collecting all the old cars and crushing them. i would go sit in it and dream of having one when i got my driver license.

Yup.
Now everyone is doing that with their firearms... except for me. I lost all mine in a boating accident.

I just purchased the right transmission from a wrecking yard. My mechanic quoted me $850 to swap the two transmissions. That seem a bit high. Is that the common price?

Also, I was quoted $800 to flush the transmission, replace the front and rear seals, and replace the filter on it. Is that also the average price?

No idea if those are good or not. I do swaps myself. A guy dropped an engine into a liberty for me once because i was just to busy. He charged 500

I’m guessing it’s accurate. I called a couple other places and they were actually higher.

that sucks!!!

TV stands for Throttle Valve in this case. Something I don't think applies by your year. Or on Fords at all that I'm aware of.
Earlier Ford automatics like C3's, C4's, C5's, C6's, and FMX's used the TV rod to force downshifts under hard throttle. AOD's used it as an input to control shift timing and harshness/softness because they didn't have a modulator valve. All the early ones except the AOD could be driven with no TV rod if you were willing to use the shift lever for forced downshifts. An AOD would die early and often with no TV rod.
