transmission compatabilty

Hi, I have an 01 ranger edge 3.0 4x4 311k mi on this thing. The Automatic transmission finally has failed on me. I am trying to find a used one but am confused as to the difference between applications. Mine seems to be either hard to find or everything is really different. Is there a difference between the 4.0 trans and mine? If so are there any other compatible with mine?
The truck is in good shape and I would like to keep it running a little longer.

Yes, the 4.0 is different. The bell housing is different, and the internals are different. The 3.0 got a 5R44E, the 4.0 got a 5R55E.

Have you considered taking it somewhere to have the existing trans repaired or buying a reman unit rather than finding a junk yard trans? It will probably help alleviate the availability issue.

Also, what's it doing?
