Transmission Advice??

When it comes to C-6's, there's no chance of getting the wrong bell pattern for a small block. Both the big block patterns are way too obvious to spot, the FE series bell is round and the 385 series (351M/400/429/460) pattern is mucho "taller" (distance from top to bottom) than a small block.
I happened to have a small block AOD and a 351M/400/429/460 C6 sitting next to each other. For reference, here's a pic to compare the two. The converters are real close to the same size, within a half inch or so. I know it's an AOD and not a C6, but it should give the op an idea of the bell sizes and patterns. I can measure the space between the top two mounting bolts if you want.

Thanks for the pics and measurements would be very helpful.

SBF is about 5-3/16" across center-to-center on my engine stand.

EDIT: I must have a little slop in the brackets on my stand...

Thanks guys. Can anybody give me the over all length of a c6 from the front of the bell housing to the end of the 4x4 tail housing?

.

The C6 case by itself with no tail housing is 20"

By "4x4 tail housing" I'm guessing you are talking about the part that goes between the transmission and t-case. There are two different lengths. The one I have I think is the most common length at 8.75" There are also some that are a couple inches shorter, I'm thinking around 6.75"

There were two different versions of the tail housing also. One has a notch for the NP205 t-case, and the other has no notch for the NP203 t-case.

The NP205 t-case length was 12.5" from the face of the t-case to the center of the rear u-joint.

So, assuming you would have the longer tail housing...

20" for the C6
8.75" for the tail housing
12.5" for the t-case

I'll let you do the math depending on what you want to know.

Thanks for the quick reply! I fi get a 2 wheel drive c6 how involved is it to switch it it to 4x4 to mount the transfer case? Is it as simple as changing the external tail housing or does the out put shaft need to be swapped?

.

The output shaft will need changed. It's the last thing to come out and the first thing to go back in basically, so you might as well rebuild it while its apart.

It's funny that you would convert to a 4x4 trans... I have a 4x4 trans that I may need to convert to 2wd lol.

From what I've read the c6's consume a fair bit of hp. Is this true?

I have never swaped from a c 6 transmission to another transmission or the other way around on the same engine, so I am not able to tell you. I have read several times though from people who have swapped that they eat some hp.

Id love to run my aod with my 460, but lentech isn't making any adapters til June..
