I just changed my fluid in my 2000 auto and followed this procedure. It worked great.:yahoo: found lots of crud on the pan mag. although I think i striped two bolts attaching the pan back doesnt leak yet :bawling:. should i leave them alone or retap to the next size?

lesson learned
DONT USE AN IMPACT TO RETIGHTED IT DID NOT SPEED UP ANYTHING

 Yeah, those just get "snugged" up. It might not leak because of the 2 tripped bolts, more so due to a cracked gasket from over tightening and/or bent transmision pan sealing surface. :)

I wish I had air tools...

:shok: Why the hell would you use an impact gun to retighten pan bolts? They're only supposed to be torqued down to around 14 ft-lbs or so. Good luck getting those bolts out next time. :fie:

I was trying to save time; i did it during my lunch hour in my shop. I am going to have to keep an eye on it for a while hope that dont bite me later. Now i am starting to get worried

NOOOO!! I would say 15-20 INCH/LBS, not Ft./LBS

as long as they arent right next to each other your should be fine but keep an eye on it, you dont have any room to oversize them. a helicoil may help you tho, just make sure you have room in the case b4 you try it or you could ruin the tranny pan sealing area.

well no leaks yet, should i back them bolts off or just leave well enough alone? wow what a diffenence that made changing that fluid it was like night and day difference.

The next time you drop the pan, drill/tap and install heli-coils in the stripped bolt holes. Then you can use the same OEM bolt and it should not leak.

That is the same thing as doing a flush and then pulling the pan and changing the filter. The way you did it was how to do it without a fluid exchanger. Just a warning to newer explorer owners, make sure you have a dipstick before you go pulling the pan down.
