transfer case

does anyone know if the transfer case from a 94 explorer with an automatic would fit on the 5-speed from an 89 2.3?

yes it will work, but you would have to grab the front driveshaft too as the front output is completely different on the transfer case, I just went out and looked at the explorer front driveshaft I have and it looks like it has an extra inch of splines to work with your setup

Well I have the entire explorer and want to put all the 4x4 running gear under my 2wd ranger. But with the explorer being automatic and a 4.0 v6 I wasn't sure. I also would like to throw a one piece driveline under the ranger, any suggestions? Thanks for the info!

You cannot put a t-case on a 2WD trans, if that's what you were thinking... (not without swapping the transmission tailshaft and extension housing with those from a similar 4WD trans).

Also, the 2WD front frame crossmember is different, the 4WD front axle brackets aren't going to fit either unless you also swap the crossmembers over.

the 2.3 in my ranger is shot anyway so it will be coming out and having a new motor put in. my plan is to just rebuild the 4.0L in my 94 explorer, throw it in my ranger and just make my ranger a 4x4. so being as ill already have the motor pulled, doing the rest of the work shouldnt be too bad. my concern is that the auto tranny in the explorer is going out and my ranger has a rebuilt. so switching the transfer case over would be ideal if possible. im also putting the 8.8 under my ranger as well.

would it be easier just to put the Ranger body on the Explorer chassis? just a thought.

The frames are different, more work than you would want to do...
