Im putting a 302 in my 1990 ranger 4x4, u have a 208 np transfer case, it looks way to wide to fit between frame rails, has any put in one in?

I took one of the pins out and ground a quarter inch off of it and reinstalled it and made two seperate shifters for it. It took like an hour or so. Its worth it now I can drive in front low and high rear low and high and of coarse 4x4 low and high. I try and put up pictures later

So you made it to be FWD in low and high by just a simple hour mod. Please put up pics!!!!! Wonder if this can be done to an NP208 though....

A 208 cant be twin sticked. The rear output is always engaged.

Twin sticking can be done only on certain t-cases. The 205 is one of them. It allows the front and rear outputs to be controlled individually, by their own shifter.

A 208 cant be twin sticked because its chain driven. Any gear driven case can be twin sticked.

The 208 will fit. You need to cut some tabs off and maybe trim the bottom of the frame rail depending on your engine placement. I used to have one and many others here use it. Like said earlier the 205 will fit no problems at all. It's just heavy and has a lousy low range and would be highly suggested that you put a mount to support the t-case from the frame as well. Gear driven t-cases can be twin sticked. The only ones you will find from a ford are the NP205 and Dana 20. As far as doing it just google it there are plenty of people who have already documented how to do it correctly with pictures and video or if you desire you can buy shift rails already ground. Its also not a bad idea to tap the shift rail plugs and put a pipe plug in its place. It does come in handy to do a dig on a tight trail from time to time.

I may end up doing the np205. This is more great info I didnt know about. Weight im not to worried about, functionally I am. Im told to stay away from the Dana20, not 100% sure why though.

The 205 is a solid case, you'll love it. As stated above, it wouldn't be a bad idea to build a crossmember to support the case, it weigs in around 130lbs

The d20 is less desireable because its small, its parts are small, and it was never built to handle big power. In fact i don't think it ever came as a factory option behind a motor with a 3 digit power rating. (i'll be proven wrong in the next 5 minutes)

No problem on fabbing up a crossmember, I figure why not make my truck more functional, right? Low gearing isnt an issue, I rarely have to use 4lo now. My 2.8 handles 4hi just fine and a v8 should be able to put out enoguh to compesate for a loss in gear reduction for climbing, trail driving, etc. Plus if I do go with an auto tranny, then that would help even more...sorta.

Plus the D20 didnt come with the Ford pattern and spline. It was 28 spline and a "texas" shape bolt pattern. You would need to get an adapter. A 205 can be had for less then the D20 or the adapter.
